Today I’m going to share with you my thoughts on MAMA performances while commenting on live vocals in Kpop generally in 2020 while showing how they have evolved since 10 years ago. From Ateez to Twice, to Stray Kids to IZ*ONE, this video isn’t meant in a malicious way because you can still have great performances without singing live, but for me personally, I connect with live vocals.
We have some performances that were LAR, or live all recorded, where the idols are lip syncing over a pre-recorded track that sounds live, but the movement they do or the energy they have doesn’t match the track that is playing. So if someone jumps, you don’t hear it, if someone is out of breath, you’re not going to hear that because they likely were not dancing while recording this track. The thing is, if you can’t hear a struggle, then I’m apprehensive. But Kpop has gotten smart, they even started recording imperfections into their lip synching tracks.
We also have LMR performance, where live vocals peak through a back up track and we have very few of those this year. We also have performances that are live, but heavily autotuned so no imperfections are heard.
But not having live vocals, or performing over a pre-recorded live track does NOT mean that the performance is bad. My favs do it, your favs do it. It’s impossible to expect people to sing and dance and sound super stable and 100% perfect. That’s not reasonable. If you are dancing, you’re going to hear a struggle when you’re singing.
So all that to say, I personally value live vocals, but I also understand the state of Kpop and how it’s evolved and I get that not every performance should be expected or needs to be live. We all value our own things in performances, but I just want everyone to understand that I do not hate groups that don’t sing live, I don’t feel entitled to their live vocals, and these are just my observations based on what I like. Also keep in mind that we have no idea what the award show or these music shows do in terms of editing idols voices before they upload these videos, and they have been known to add autotune.

Those of you commenting about treasure... they were definitely not live. During “Boy,” there was no movement in their vocals while dancing... and during “I love you,” it’s very obvious they’re lip syncing (LAR).

I'm definitely one of those people that like hearing the imperfections in live vocals. Is that weird? I liked the miss A song and performance from 2010 much better than the perfected smoothed out 2020 recording. I just think something about the tone changes and stuff in real live performances are more interesting to hear than perfection.

I think bts use autotune these days. You can clearly hear they sing, their breaths in fancam or their behind the scene video of the performance. Or maybe the also did the LAR in another take then in the end the production team edit it out

In cry for me, I noticed that Twice’s lip movements are different than what they’re supposed to be saying so I’m assuming that they were lip syncing. No hate! They’re amazing and so talented!

Pointing out lip sync isn't always meant to be disrespectful. So people need to stop attacking someone who pints these things out cause it's not like they're trying to say that the artists can't sing or anything. Cause even if they are not singing live it is their own vocals that they are lip syncing to.

Unpopular opinion: Most of the 1st gen and 2nd gen performances and even some of the early 3rd gen performances were live (as in not auto-tuned or lip synced)

The current title implies everything would be talked about but turns out she only mentioned Treasure to question YG about Blackpink. Ugh. Their stage was the most expensive one (and the only one who stuck to the theme) but no one mentions its beauty. Mamamoo are vocal queens and yet get disrespected like this.

It is nonsensical on why idols do lip sync. All second gen idols sing live everyday. Plenty of them could sing well from han seungwoo, zea, nine muses,, ukiss etc etc It is just excuse to be lazy. I rather see idols with bad vocal than lip sync if i wanna see lip sync, i could just watch fancy mv. This is why i don't watch the so called live performance anymore Lame 🌻🌻🌻🐢🐢

For BTS, I feel like they do sing live most of the time bcuz in a lot of performances, you can hear that change in the flow or sometimes they pronounce some words differently (idk how to really explain it but you can hear it when you watch multiple performances) However, for award shows, it feels like there's a lot of smoothing going on and also they might also have like a backup track or smth that they're singing over, especially for the last words of a line. That's why they stop a little b4 the end and then catch their breath to get the next lyrics. I think that's how it is for a lot of other idols who sing live. But on a side note, Stray Kids' performance was so damn amazing and they deserve so much better tbh! And I'm sad they didn't invite more female idols, there were a lot of performances I wanted to see but oh well

Your argument for NCT not singing live was that the breath sound was in the same place that in the other performances. Here is why I personally disagree with that. When you train singing especially a particular song you pick a certain part where you have to take a breath to be able to keep on singing the next part. When you pick and you feel it is the right moment you stick with it. I did that many times I took a breath in the same place in the song everytime I sung it because it was the perfect space for me to do it so I didn’t change it. I believe they were singing live. I know it might be hard to believe. However SM is very strict when it comes to vocals and they have been making their idols train their breathing while singing and running on treadmill for years now.

Concerning that arrow you mentioned at the beginning of the video, Angelina, and I am only speaking from my own perspective and experience in the backstage of musical and theatre productions, such things are usually used as markings. From what I saw there were at least 2 on this stage, but maybe more, less visible. They show where to stand so the light hits you in a certain way (when lighting moods are prerecorded, and they usually are) - one wouldn't want to stand in the dark or less lighted areas instead of the spotlight :)) Also, if moving cameras are involved, like here, it also shows up to where you can advance on stage, so you literally don't get smacked in the face. Or where the camera will catch your chocolate side best, as practiced in rehersals on that particular stage for that particular performance (especially for close- ups of the centre). So yeah, there are safety reasons too. Also, here they used a lot of video SFX/projections that involved parts of the stage, so artists should also be in particular spots, so their choreo matches the lighting and video design :) hope this explains things a bit better. If anyone has other opinions, feel free to add them. :)

according to me, yes they did sing live. the bg track was a bit too loud and I think hyejin did a lil bit of lipsyncing but it was live bc I could literally hear solar singing during the dance break of aya. it's very prominent.

Honestly I miss live vocals in performances so much, just no autotune. I hate how the standards have changed because all it does is set unrealistic expectations. So many fans think autotuned or prerecorded vocals are live. It makes me cringe how I go onto MR removed videos and everyone praises their faves for eating CDs when the vocals aren't live. My issue is even non-dance performances are autotuned now. Nearly all live performances have autotune over them, like Masked Singer, even Knowing Bros. Or those 'live' performance vids idols release which are autotuned. It's getting so hard to hear raw vocals besides on vlive or short snippets. I love unedited vocals, like you said it adds authenticity. I don't see the point of editing live vocals like that, otherwise I'd just go listen to the recorded version. Why call it a live performance then.

I will say that musicians and performers always plan breaths so that the song sounds consistent + so that they don't accidentally hyperventilate/make sure they have enough air for the next part. I'm not an nctzen so I'm not sure how much live they do but the breaths always being in the same place is kinda expected

I've seen a few of your videos before and like your input because I know 3rd gen more than 2nd gen. I just have a note and a comment. If you are going to only talk about some of the performances I think it would good if you mention that in the beginning of your video as you left out performances people were waiting for you to talk about and maybe change the title to reflect that as well. For the breath being in the same place that doesn't automatically mean its LAR because there are designated spots for breathing in every song. When I used to perform I would mark on my sheet music where I should breathe and with how much the idols practice and the amount of dancing breath marks are even more important and very common. I'm not saying it's not LAR but it is possible either way. Edit: fixed spelling error.

I love NCT but they most always use recorded voice perfomances. I guess they do it because of the hyped up stages, but idk. I feel like I'd rather hear them pant and struggle than a clean, perfect recording. I get that some parts kind of have to be recorded, but why most if not all? if we practice and always take a breath in a certain part then we will automatically take a breath everytime we reach that part. So always breathing in the same section cannot be used as a sign that a singer whether they are singing live or not.

i love that you added at the end that despite them not performing on this show doesn't mean they aren't talented. i think at this point in the industry live backings are oftentimes more so to save idols from potential "mess ups" which shouldn't really mean anything. most -- if not all -- of these idols have demonstrated they fully capable of singing and dancing live in fancams, concerts, and other not pre-recorded events.
