Is Twice's Momo a technically good singer? Does JYP force her to sing in a higher, more nasally voice? What do her vocals say about the Kpop industry and its desire for perfection?
Welcome to an episode of Kpop investigations. I’m your super legit journalist angelina and basically this is a series where I take a specific subject and do a bit of deep dive into it and share with you my super scientifique results. In today’s episode, we are going to tackle the accusations made agains’t Twice and their live singing, notably Momo’s live singing voice as it was recently showcased in an encore of show champion. And some people were quick to point some flaws within their natural singing voices, expressing that they sound quite different without a backup track to support them.

Nayeon & Momo hosted a vlive on 5 May 2020. On the 15min 16sec mark, they talked about More&More comeback spoiler. I will quote what Nayeon said. Nayeon: "PD-nim told us to sing in a cute way." In Sixteen, the reality show that created TWICE, the concept wasn't cute at all for Momo's performances. Her voice was not as nasally and high-pitched as now, or even just back in TT era and so on. So this shows that it's because of the way they are told to sing cutely, that Momo's voice has to be more strained. It's in her range, if not she wouldn't be able to record it to start with. But it's not in her comfortable range, she can't hit the note comfortably and easily enough. Even before TWICE's debut, JYP has been said to teach his artists "half-air-half-sound" vocal technique. I saw many saying that it is not a healthy technique, as it is simply used to produce breathy sound. You can search it on IRitem about his half air half sound technique, I think there will be better explanation there. Not only so, when Nayeon & Momo, on the same vlive at 31:40, were asked by ONCEs on tips to sing well, they asked ONCEs the same question in return because they wanted to know too. They were told to loosen up (kind of just make your body relax) in order to hit higher notes. It's true but the fact that they asked ONCEs in return just makes me think that they wanted to learn more about vocals, they were concerned about it, they didn't have good-enough vocal instructors to teach them techniques that suit each of their individual voices, and that can make all their voices healthy and pleasing-sounding for them. If you look at SME, literally all of their artists have proper and great techniques (i'm just really fascinated by SM vocals :D) and it just makes me hope that JYPE artists can have same vocal instructors too :( In general, I just think that JYPE doesn't focus a lot on vocals, but rather the dance aspect. Just like how YGE focuses on rap and SME focuses on vocals. I tend to be very long-winded, but I hope at least a part of my reply answer to your question :)

I wiiiiiish Kpop Stan's would get it through their heads that... 1. Idols sing with backing tracks. 2. MR Removed doesn't necessarily mean that the vocals they're hearing are actually live and that pre recorded live vocals are a thing lol 3. No one is perfect, no one's idol is actually legitimately perfect. Of course they can be perfect in our eyes but I mean, technically speaking. 4. Unrelated but... Sometimes they forget that momo's forte is on dancing not singing, you shouldn't expect her to be the same level as nayeon and jihyo, because nayeon and jihyo were meant to be singers. Whilst momo is more on dancing or rapping, but for me she should she looks more comfortable on dancing.

I feel like at this point of time, she should know what she's good at and where to improve on. If she's singing like that in the recording, that kinda implies a certain level of confidence and competence in that skill. Ie, it isn't a fluke and she should be able to do it again. So this encore was a shocker and betrays expectation. And the double standard in girl groups could be a problem of their own making. Unlike boy groups, who are known for some degree of rowdiness and rough-housing, girl groups are always portrayed as refined and ladylike. So there's no avenue for them to let off steam so to say.

About that, well that's not what JYPE was going for. Honestly Minyoung could outsing and outrap probably all of 3rd gen that I know of, Wendy, Lisa, Rose, Yuju, etc., but they were looking for dance, aegyo, personality, and group chemistry as well.

Imperfections in kpop should be normalized again. Voice cracks, idols forgetting parts of choreography and getting angry with fans, fashion sense being wacky. Us as fans should start to hold them to the same standard as we do Western artists. Vocalists shouldn't be forced into a dancer. I would never expect Ariana to suddenly become a dancer like Beyoncé. Dancers have it hard. They have to be at their absolute best with the choreography while simultaneously staying stable.

Personally I think JYP force her to change her tune and all that, but she is not a bad singer at all. You just have to listen her vocals during sixteen era, even in their Move cover, clearly her tone is not that high pitched, and even she can rap, she showed us rap in I'm gonna be a star and Likey changed part version. Momo's nasal voice is not the most pleasant, but i think she really knows how to control it and use it. Momo is a great singer. If you go back to her Sixteen days she was more confident and singing comfortably lower. Now she has to sing high, dance, and look perfect which singing super high while dancing is VERY HARD. I'm a singer and even when I go higher I have to stop and take a deep breath or think about my note. Momo has a beautiful voice when she is singing comfortably. I just think JYP should stop trying to make her sound *cutesy* and let her be comfortable. Her voice is still very recognizable when she sings lower and it sounds amazing. Being in the kpop industry is not easy, and this toxicity is why a lot of members get depressed. Give her lower lines and watch her shine.

I feel the part where Momo's voice most suit the voice in the song was Jeongyun parts in the verse. It was lower pitch in the song other than high pitch. I think she should have suit more in that part.

This was just encore stage, this the stage where idols just sing for fun. She was bowing to other idol while singing which was just for fun. Will she have to professional while singing which was not for presenting also? Some groups eat lemon while singing, some use helleom, some even eat during the encore. It is just idols having fun after they win by doing so much hard work. You should see it as just fun. We can see very fun moments like Irene Seulgi's monster middle finger, Somi's trophy broke out of excitement. This is just so fun to watch.

Ya’ll need to hear More & More Japanese version, like do ya’ll hear Momo’s voice in that version? she sounds strained and her throat might be unhealthyyy :(( it almost sounds like she’s screaming.. it gets annoying every time she sings, her throat might be not comfortable, like, JYP needs to think, Momo almost sounds like a screaming person, i’m not hating on her, but she really sounds like almost screaming, Momo has a real voice, and JYP needs to understand that Momo’s throat may feel worse, it sounds like she is strained, but JYP needs to change Momo’s position in the group, remember? she said she is more comfortable with rappig than being a vocalist, bruh, for me it’s okay, but Momo needs to release her real real voice, she needs to break JYP’s rule about her voice, like she needs rest.

bruh momo isnt bad, like she sings ok, i dont hav problems wit her voice. Like JYP said himself, she's quite essential to Twice. Like I dont wanna be mean and stuff but JYP honestly has some pretty shit choreographers who make their idols look like they dancing with stone bricks up their asses, only exception I'd say is Itzy cuz their choreo is sooo fucking KILLER, like given the fact that JYP hires dumpster choreographers, I'd say he'd also need to recruit dancers as a way to make up for the lacking choreo in G7 and Twice. It sounded like Momo's vocals were strained a bit during the encore. Like maybe the song is out of her comfortable singing range. I think that Momo tries her hardest to be a great singer, and she is great when the songs are in her range. I've noticed this in a few other cases where idles are just really unstable or they're straining their voice because the songs they are given aren't properly tailored to them. And in these cases can you can almost always see the idle be really disappointed when they can't hit the right notes. It's unfair to the idles. It is especially unfair to blame the idles for something that is the company's fault. If More & More really is out of Momo's range, it's not her fault. It's JYP's fault for not properly tailoring her parts to be in her range. Even if Momo has more vocal training, that won't guarantee that her range will expand.

It's not about being perfect, Momo doesn't have to be a Mariah level of vocal but at least be average, there are a lot of people that is not vocally trained but even better that most of the kpop artists not just Momo. You also mentioned that having unique sound is better in the industry but it doesn't mean you have to give up the technical aspects of singing there a lot of normal people, amateur singers, professional singers or artists out there that are technically good but also have a unique sound. If Mom can't sing then don't sing or if she can't sing just own it. I know an actress who is tone deaf that has her own concert, she knows that she is tone deaf and she owned it and she told in an interview she is doing it to make her fans and other people happy. I'm not hating on them but at least prove that they can sing while dancing 100% pure live without pre-recorded tracks even just for once, because when you examine all of their "LIVE" performances it's not really live or not 100% pure live without pre-recorded vocals. Some of you will say that they are just resting their voice, what's there to rest when they didn't even sing the whole song 100% pure live not just once but most of the time in their entire career. I'm not expecting a perfect performance but at least prove that they can do all the things they have been doing this whole time but 100% pure live not pre-recorded and authentic live singing performance, at least an average singing performance will suffice.

The issue is that if she keeps singing with this cute voice instead of her naturally deep voice, it can probably affect her vocals and she probably won't be able to hit a single note in the few coming years

I'm always going to compare people to Red Velvet. These are a set of girls that don't need to try to make their voices unique to stand out, it comes naturally. You can be a trained singer and stand out from the rest. People may argue that Yeri is one of the "unique" singers but no. Yeri actually is a trained singer and can hold her how against a lot of the main vocalists in K-pop right now. In fact, this is why SM is the superior company when it comes to vocals. YGE and JYP legit don't know how to craft vocalists.
