ITZY “Not Shy” » M/V iritem.info/cd/fy-lm-h-y/rbegp6uw0HWsoIk.html
Hi, welcome! My name is Angelina and today we’re going to talk about Itzy, most notably recent things that have been said in regards to the misogyny that they face as a girl group as well as Ryujin’s comments about body image.
Now Itzy have actually recently released a video called “Letters to Midzy” where they get very personal and quite honest about how they feel, and I applaud that level of transparency from them.
In this 17 minute video, each member gives a raw insight into their perspective on things, whether it’s about the pressures of being in a dance based group, or the pressures of keeping your emotions bottled up to even backhanded misogynistic compliments, which was highlighted by Ryujin and I want to touch on that.

People are still plying dumb in the comments talking about how weight puts pressure on your joints, makes you slower, talking about technicalities of line aesthetic and whatnot; pretending like we're not talking about performers who are already underweight and are considered too heavy when they start to approach the right weight for their bodies. I mean, duh, weight does affect performance but these performers are not obese!
三浦剣 پیش ماه
こんにちは angelina, i really hope that you will read this comment a lot. I totally do agree with your opinion about waight stigma, fat shaming and all the topics you spoke about. And i personaly would never judge a person because of his her, weight, skin color or anything else. BUT The BUT isn't really a disagreeing, but i personaly do know that overweight is just not healty for a human body, and so it's isn't to be that skinny that your skin literally lays on your bones. So the thing i don't really understand is, that i would never judge someone for being a little stronger built, but it just makes me sad that, idunno American food for not really rich people just isn't healthy at all and makes people overweight. And btw i don't say that only Amercans are, i just put it as an example cause it's perfect to be one. So i just am sad that the unhealthy and also artificial food makes people overweight and unhealthy. The only reason i don't want people to be overweight is because of their health... And you don't have to believe me at all, i am just a forteen year old asian kid stating his opinion. And also, greetings from Austria!

I'm really curious about how people call "self care" when an idol literally starve for days, how can hurting your body be healthy?

It makes Itzy stand out from all the other girl groups that don't speak up about this stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if JYPE itself encouraged the girls to speak on these topics because it'll get the publics attention (which it definitely did) so mission accomplished on their part.

I kinda agree but I think it's true that more female group choreographies are easier in general, some like Itzy's are hard but most are not as difficult as male group's choreography-women are sometimes expected to dance in heels which makes dancing more difficult which men are never asked to do, and it's a biological fact that no one can actually dispute that men have more muscle mass and are physically stronger than women so it's just a fact that they can do more powerful movements- especially when it comes to lifts and jumps that women can't do or it would be extremely challenging for them to do. so while I sort of agree, I think that Ryujin interpreted that comment in like the most least generous way she could. Honestly I think when people say that it really is just a compliment.

The problem with this idols weight is, that they are so thin that their bodies desspretly trying to gain weight. I mean, REALLY, all of this grown up adults have the bodies of young children. You all know this really skinny 10 years old that only seem to be bones and long legs. That is okay for a still growing childrensbody, but not for an adult. So, when a body recognize it is to thin (and every body has kind of an natural 'perfect' state of weight which it is allways trying to reach) it will trying to gain weight. So the second a real thin person is eating 1kcal more than its body needs to stay alive this body is trying to put it into fatcells. Simply because the whole organism is at pure stress and being hold in a constant state of lacking ressources. That is why idols so often suddenly gain weight really fast. They might eat the same things like allways, but maybe just had a day or two not to work. Their bodies take the chance to build up ressources because the organisms getting the feedback that they don't have enough reserves for bad times. Or ANY reserves. It is really heartbreaking. If we see a dog or a cat in that kind of skinny state everybody would say that this is not a good looking, healthy animal. But this young women are forced to be - often heavy - underweight just because it 'looks better'. Such a shame. Sry for the long post.

Itzy is super talented.. That's it. Not super talented "for a girl group" just super talented. I admit that I had low expectations but that's because I think jyp is a little sexist and I didn't think he'd allow the girl to showcase themselves as much as they did. Ecah one of their comebacks gets better and better. They seem like smart people and honestly I'm not really a jyp stan anymore (because dodgy) but if I was they'd be my favorite gg probably with twice. I honestly just wish people would respect gg more.

Tbh, choreography looks A LOT better on a thin body. I’m sorry but it just does. As a dancer who has been larger and thinner over the years, I can say as an overall rule, it’s true. The intricacies of the moves are more visible, like slight changes, body rolls, and overall muscle control is just more visible on a thin body. Also, idols are the best of us. They are who we look up to. Personally, I want to look up to thin and healthy people. When I was bigger, I understood the appeal of the body positivity stuff because it makes you feel ok with how you are, but I’m actually glad I didn’t stay ok with being larger. I feel so so so much better now that I’m healthy and thin. Being thin isn’t easy, and it’s another way our idols work super hard to give us the best performances. Of course there are very talented larger bodied dancers, but it’s just straight up true that choreo, especially KPOP choreo, looks better with a thin body. That said, it’s all subjective. You’re so beautiful and inspiring! Thanks for making videos! Sending love!

I think what Ryujin is trying to say is that kpop dances are extremely core heavy dances and to make it look effortless being thinner ensures you have more stamina to flawlessly complete such choreos. Like lets be honest kpop dance these days is extremely difficult, be it boys or girls, and requires a lot of jumps, squats and other acrobatic movements often at an extremely fast pace and wearing footwear like heals which dont provide support for your body. So maybe what Ryujin is trying to say is if you are on the thinner side you may breathe less heavily then someone who is not so thin as you go through the choreography and have a higher stamina. Or its a little less painful and less exhausting to your muscles when you are doing a choreo which requires you to literally support your whole body weight on a very small part of your body. Personally I dont know how to dance and therefore cant really comment on how body weight impacts the fluidness of dancing. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. I dont think Ryujin was in anyway body shaming anyone, but I think she truly believes being thin equates to a more flawless effortless choreo maybe cause she herself has noticed in her own body. Maybe loosing weight helped her to do the choreo faster, better or have more stamina. Whatever be it, the fact that she shared her thoughts on such a sensitive topic shows how courageous and open she is. Its okay if someone doesn't accept her mindset or pov, but lets all appreciate the fact that she spoke it as logically as she possibly could.

yeah JYP's belief that thicker girls can't dance as well is such bullshit and this man has a lot of internalized fatphobia. They can dance just as well, he just doesn't like the way they look so he disguises it as a quote unquote "dance problem" bc their "dance" wasn't pleasing for him to watch. Then, his trainees start to buy into that bs.

I think Ryujin just meant that she knows the way society thinks and that being thin might 'sell more for aesthetics'. But just like her I also find it sad that it has to be that away...it's basically a marketing image for the people. You get to big, people talk. You get too thin, people talk. People will always talk but thank you for making this!

I might be wrong, but I thought when she was talking about the "spectrum of clothes" the idol can wear if they are skinny, can also be linked to the idea that a lot of companies rent clothes for MVs/performances. So because the outfit is already made and there can be only few sizes available, idols who fit the 'ideal' Korean body can select a wider range of clothes. Whereas, if the idol is not this size, they cannot really borrow as many outfits. But big companies can also tailor the cloths and even buy it (if the company has money)

There was this ad for an ice cream brand that featured a plus size girl who was dancing freestyle while holding a pint of ice cream. Honestly I was mesmerized. She looked confident and that was the point of the ad. It goes to show that having more weight doesn't necessarily mean you're not healthy, especially if you can dance like she did.

I did dances for boy groups and girl groups. The dances for girl groups are harder than they look. I was surprised, because they look easier but they are actually harder. Also, it's about genre and type. Girl groups have more aggressive choreography when it's a girl crush, powerful concept. Men's choreography is less aggressive when it's a sexy, sultry, cute, concept, etc. It's not about boy or girl as much as concept type. And the people who generalize girl groups probably don't know that many girl groups.

When I see performances from for ex. 2010 I see that girls were super skinny, almost anorectic, but now they’re trying to focus more on health than looks? I want to clarify how I interpreted Ryujins comments to performance and weight a bit. Thinner bodies usually mean cleaner dance lines and more distinct movements, it's the same reason ballerinas and contemporary dancers wear thin, skin tight leotards. It's all about the silhouette and your dance lines looking sharp. I dont agree that you NEED to be skinny to look amazing in aperformance, but it's a long standing idea in the dancing scene that transcends almost all cultures and contexts.

I hate when every time an idol's weight fluctuates, all the comments on their performances and fancams are either saying they're worried they're starving themselves or saying things like "oMg tHiCc qUeEn." Your preferences on their own bodies don't matter. The best body doesn't exist. The body the idol feels the most comfortable and happiest in is the one that's right for them. It's not for you to insert your opinion on about. I don't think these ppl have bad intentions but is weight the only thing they can talk about? Why can't they talk about the actual performance and how hard the idols worked to improve and prepare for the comeback. Yes, a lot of idols starve themselves and suffer from binge eating and things like that but the more you talk about it, the more attention you're going to put on the idol's weight and the more they're gonna feel self-conscious and pressured to look a certain way. Talking about their weight whether it's concern or praise doesn't help in any way. So stop talking about it and they will seek help on their own. As fans, we just gotta give them support by stop focusing on their weight and spreading positivity.

I have the complete opposite opinion on weight and dancing. I find it a lot more attractive “aesthetically” when the dancer/performer has more meat on their bones. When they’re super thin, the moves look clunky and frail. It also helps when you’ve got more muscle and strength to move. When you have 0 muscle and body fat, moves aren’t as clean or as sharp. There’s no strength in the movements. It saddens me because Ryujin was actually a bit thicker during the Wannabe comeback and she lost some weight for Not Shy. And I don’t know the reason obviously. She might have just naturally lost it or she might have lost it because of all the reasons she said in the video. But I really hope it’s not. Purely for “aesthetic” reasons, I really loved watching her dance with her Wannabe era body. I liked the shapes, the way her body moved, the way everything looked when she was dancing. That sounds really creepy but I hope that makes sense. Dances just looked fuller that way. Again, all of this is just my view on the “aesthetics”. If we’re talking about principles, it absolutely does not matter what weight you’re at when you’re dancing. Realistically, you have to have great strength and muscle tone to achieve good dancing, but that’s achievable for everyone. Bigger people with a lot of body fat can still have those muscles and that strength and flexibility. When you have a natural talent for dancing, it just shows. If you’re not “light” in dancing like JYP says, it’s not because you’re physically heavy. It’s just the way some people move. It’s all about technique and not weight.
PurpleBushie پیش 5 ماه
I think Ryujin’s comments are coming from the right place, but given the culture of the company and Korean pop labels as a whole, she has had inherent biases programmed into her. It may fall a bit short to a lot of us, but it’s important to understand that she is trying, and would probably be happy to learn better! That is, assuming she wasn’t trying to protect herself. I’ve seen plenty of idols, even other JYP idols, backtracking and trying to say that all of their suffering was worth it because it “made them prettier.” We can’t know for sure what her true feelings are because of the culture of JYP. They want you to put up a facade of staying healthy and caring for your needs, but in reality, force you to do whatever it takes to uphold the standard. Y’know. For the Music.
PurpleBushie پیش 5 ماه
EXID is one of my top groups, one of my favourite bands in general (I hope they’re all enjoying their new adventures under new labels. I care them immensely) and I always think about how their hip thrust move was banned for literally no reason, especially given the choreo displayed by male idols. And then LE not only made their next song about workplace sexual harassment, but the band also made the video a mix of that and a criticism of censorship of women in Korean media. Legendary. (I’m not trying to “advertise my fav” I just really appreciate a song covering these subjects, especially in an industry as controlled as Korean pop, or even pop in general.)

It makes me a little sad that Ah Ye is reduced to “Wi Arae 2: Electric Boogaloo.” They are SUPER similar, but it has a lot of important meaning in it and I wish people would give it a fair shot. Anyway, though I’m certain their company pushed it to be just like Wi Arae (trying to recreate a breakout hit is very common in music), I think the fact that it’s a deliberate criticism of the way they were treated by the media makes the similarities more justified. It’s like a dark sequel.

Dancers often have problems with food because of what Ryujin said. It isn't only her or JYP, I've heard from actual dancers that they say they want to look skinnier because it's "better to look at" since they look taller, and that limbs that look too short give off the illusion of movements lacking power.

I've never gotten too deep into kpop bc it all seems so fabricated. The music, the outfits, the dances are given to these idols from the huge companies behind them. In addition to that they seem too perfect, too cute, too untouchable. Everything they wear and say is controlled by others. That's why I think it's so cool and important that itzy speak for themselves (are allowed to speak for themselves). Bc that way it's easier to see them as humans and to connect to them

9:40 I think Ryujin meant, that being in shape helps to show the moves and makes you dance better which then makes the performance look better. Also able to wear a wide range of clothing which adds something extra to the performance. American popmusic for example rarely dance that intense like Kpop does, so it requires a different level of body fitness (have you seen how Beyonce dances? It's nowhere near Kpop level, have you seen how slim Michael Jackson was? point made.) Its a fact that having a fit body, which automatically results in a slimmer body type, you have more endurance and stamina to be able to dance better. Has nothing to do with body shaming, but its just sheer facts considering the level of dancing Kpop artists do when they perform. ask a bodybuilder to dance kpop, it would not be aesthetically pleasing in kpop dancing standards. its not meant as an insult, it's just the reality, whether you like it or not.
GenericOpinion پیش 5 ماه
@Oh my god, my heart is- my heart is oh my god! I am not saying plus size dancers cannot dance well, I am just saying they cannot perform Kpop style dances well.
Oh my god, my heart is- my heart is oh my god!
Your comparisons here are extremely unfair. You are taking skinny people who are _specifically trained in dance,_ and comparing them to people whose principal talents lie in other skills. Of course a bodybuilder won't be able to dance as well as a kpop star, because a bodybuilder has never been _trained_ in dance. If that bodybuilder were to spend a decade learning intense choreographies, they likely _would_ be at least somewhat comparable. Michael Jackson was known as one of America's best dancers - so why are you comparing him to Beyoncé, known for her incredible _vocals,_ and claiming that this is proof that skinny >>> curvy? That's no different than saying something like, "Arianna Grande is an incredible vocalist, the Black man who lives in the house beside mine has a really horrible singing voice, thus this proves that White people are better singers than Black people". See how silly that sounds? There are tons of plus-size dancers in the world, and they are super talented and fun to watch. Talent is not about what a body physically looks like, it's about what it can _do;_ and if you can dance well, it doesn't matter what number you get in a scale.
Patricia پیش 5 ماه
I respect Ryujin's comments, it is her own perspective. It is still very brave of her to address it. However, as much as I am a fan, I beg to disagree with what she said regarding the performance looking better because they are on the thinner side. This is how she views it but as for me, like what Angelina stated, there are dancers who don't fit their standards but are kicking ass... Parris Goebel, ya'll is one great example. It just goes to show there are a lot of sides to this argument and people will tackle it in different ways. We just hope that them, sharing their thoughts would be a start for these idols to not be afraid to speak their mind as well.
GenericOpinion پیش 5 ماه
I think their record label did right to let them speak freely, because as far as I understood some internet reactions were a bit getting out of control in comparing ITZY with standards of other Kpop groups. Instead of waiting for some member of ITZY getting depressed and commit suicide, they allowed them to speak their mind, and maybe that will calm down things and will have a therapeutic effect, in that regard JYP takes good care of their artists, thats why they are so succesful for so long.

Comment about weight-movement relation. I’m studying to be a sport trainer. In one of my classes, a teacher told us “If you want to be elite athlete you need your body in the perfect way (depends the sport)” In dancing, the main thing is the body movement, if you want to move fast and accurate, the thin body is better. Just an example, Think about a whatever sport with weight categories (box, tkd) and compare a fight in the minor weight category with the major one. You’ll notice the point.

Because in jihyo case she wasn’t fat she was just heavier than what she used to be because she wasn’t looking after herself as much as she did in the beginning because the had been training for so long but didn’t debut. Because of that she gained weight but most importantly she wasn’t as fit and healthy as before. And that’s why the extra weight made her dancing look slow and less impressive. It wasn’t because she was “fat” but because she wasn’t as fit. But there are so many “thicker and bigger” dancing queens and that isn’t weird. It’s because they work so hard and are really strong and healthy but just not skinny being skinny just isn’t their natural body. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But if you weren’t “thicker” in the beginning that means you’re probably not taking care of yourself as much as you used to. Plus JYP really cares about the health of everyone in his company that’s why they have that organic lunchroom. He just wants them to be the most healthy person they can be. And if they start to gain weight that is not the case. So basically if a person start to gain weight and dances it’ll probably won’t look as good as before the weight gain purely because of strength, reaction and the health of the performer...

I WAS SHOCKED NGL. This is why I stan girl groups ngl. From Red Velvet actually being self aware about them having to reduce their choreos as the years go by (Irene saying that she was glad Monster was more dance prioritized on a stream), the feminist drops to Itzy talking about all the dumb double standards they have to deal with. I love my quirky queens

I got into kpop over a decade ago and I never would have DREAMED we would be having this kind of discourse, and with such nuance, about kpop and idol culture in English-speaking spaces. Thank you SO much for sharing, I’m really glad my Recommended brought me here!

As someone who is a very thicc and a dancer( I minored in dance don’t come for me) I totally understand what ryujin is saying and I LOVE HER and I STAAANNNN ITZY, but I think there is also room to be a little more inclusive with her statement. I always felt like costumers struggled with me when it was easier to handle my way thinner dancer friends. I totally understand that it’s easier to be styled when your thin but I think that goes beyond dancing and shows that people just aren’t willing to work with people of size on costuming and there also aren’t a lot of options for people of size to work with and that I think is a bigger issue about how we hold people of size in society. And as far as dancing I understand that the performance can “look better” when your thinner. I dance primarily hip hop and I feel like when we automatically assume people of size can’t dance fast or make it look as good it only contributes to the stigma that fat people shouldn’t dance or they look bad when they do. Sorry that was long I have opinions LMAOOO. But thanks for your videos keep up the good work!!

I really hate how women are being constantly scrutinized because of their bodies. And the body positivity movement is actually just promoting tearing other women down because of their body size. "Ohh she's slim so she's unhealthy" "Ohh finally she has a booty" Goshh Can we just accept women has different body sizes? There are slim, a little bit overweight and medium size women and there are all real bodies. One body size is not better than the other

BlinksPy Blackpink پیش 5 ماه
I understand the thin comment, and I agree with Angelina saying that there are many good dancers who aren't really slim. BUT, I agree with the opinion of the idol as well. Sadly, in a group it looks much better when everyone has simmilar weight or body types. Male Idols have to go through this too but no one is calling them unhealthy (I think Jimin from BTS talked about his restrictive diet, and it showed the pressure both male and female idols suffer) Kpop is about aesthetics and in Korea being overweight is not something worthy of praise. But if you're a soloist I think you can get away with it. I think we should just accept Kpop is like that, and allow the idols to make the decisions. Hwasa for example, she could've been depressed about comments about her body but she decided to embrace her uniqueness. People are always going to talk, but at the end of the day is the Idol's decision

Netizens after hearing JYP's comment about Jihyo and other idols' weights: "We were rooting for you, we were all rooting for you!" Also, for context, netizens seem to favor JYPE over the other two companies in the big three because they supposedly treat their idols better

I think Ryujin said that being thin makes the dance look better could be an influence of "trainers" they had in their trainee days. I remember 1 judge on sixteen not choosing Jihyo's photo because her "body line" is not pretty. I think that's how Ryujin got that thinking and it's sad.
Miam پیش 5 ماه
Yeah I agree, it’s pretty sad. As a dancer myself I was very confused when she said that because it’s really not the case.

I think what she meant with broader spectrum of costumes is that the stylists most of the time don't make/buy them new clothes, they have all the girls' measurements and bring them clothes they have in stock that will fit them. So I get where she's coming from... if all the girls stay the most average size, which is unfortunately thin, their stylists can give them broader spectrum of costumes

I both agree and disagree with you. You are correct in that people with bigger bodies can dance beautifully and look beautiful doing it too. However, to Ryujin’s point, when a group dances together, it does look better when they are the same size. It looks much more uniform. I am NOT saying only if they are skinny, just saying the same size (larger or skinnier). When you mix body sizes, you loose a lot of the uniformity. Take Everglow as an example. It looks awkward when Ashia dances next to EU due to the extreme height difference. They still dance great and it looks good, but it would look more uniform if they were closer in height.
erka پیش 5 ماه
honestly, i respect ryujin for speaking up about this, but just because you are a feminist doesn't mean you should say rude things about male idols as well. even as a girl, i think its better that female idols are banned for inappropriate things, because the male idols have to take off their shirts and more on stage, and thats not fair to male idols

i'm pretty thin ( not too thin) these past years and i am already dancing during those years, but recently i gain weight but not as much and my dancing is quite more powerful and cleaner (not the best dancer tho) than before with my thin figure. and some might be the other way around. so yea, weight and body size doesn't matter, atleast for me. yes that's my opinion. EVERYONE IS WORTH IT

Thank you for talking about body image fatphobia! I think topics like double standards are talked about a lot in the kpop community and industry but fatshaming and fatphobia are almost completely overlooked. I loved that you mentioned the circular logic in trying to answer the question "why do kpop idols need to be thin?" (they don't obvs). So many times I've watched audition programs and other SK shows where idols and their weight are mentioned (or even just weight in general) and there's this whole dumb idea that it's about """taking care of yourself""". When in reality I don't think any dietician would consider dieting (especially extreme dieting that leads to EDs) to be "taking care of yourself" because it's actually so incredibly harmful to the idols health and ability to have a sustainable career. unfortunately I think the world thinks not skinny = unhealthy which is such a shame Oh and also as a dancer of 20 years, body shape ain't got nothing to do with how well you can dance or perform, it's about the individuals skill, talent, and hard work alone PERIOD JYp is dumb and has brainwashed these poor girls

I see so many idols being tired, fainting, The staff carrying the idol like a backpack. Not only are they tired, they don't eat well to be "lighter", dance faster. They are exhausted because they have no energy because they literally have nothing in their stomach there is nothing to burn. It's really sad and alarming
