Live performances in Kpop have always been something I loved to analyze, and it seems it's not always black and white. Thusly, I have decided to do a deep analysis into live performances and lip-syncing and everything in between.
From Blackpink's to 2NE1, all the way from 2nd gen to 4th gen. I wanted to take a look into a multitude of performances and see perhaps why some performances are live and some have stronger backup vocals, as well as how these aspects may have changed since 2nd gen.

Infinite and Lovelyz are the group that always singing live in every music show since debut till now. Their company already train their trainees by practicing singing live while dancing that's why this group are so stable when they are singing. Their concert always have a live bands and even have an acoustics ver of their songs.

by watching a shitload of kpop performances for the last 5 years, there's no doubt that when singing live s groups come first, I'm a music major and minor in composing (though it's more of self-teaching) I can clearly hear when the performances are live or not, usually kpop idols lipsync during the first week of promotions, to establish their "stage presence" by dancing, of course not all of them do so, but basically twice have been doing so for the last six comebacks or so, and i'm honestly sick of it, you'll only hear twice live when they go on tour, bts has done so too, during the first week of the "on" performances (i can't remember for the others since that was the most recent performance that i've watched) but normally they don't lipsync much that's what i remember from older performances, for the idols who normally don't lipsync there's mamamoo who is surely one of the best live performers, redvelvet (though i can clearly remember a performance of psycho being lypsinced in those shows during the end of the year after wendy's injury), exo basically one of the best singing ido groups, not only during live performances, normally they don't lypsinc at all, they ay have done some lypsincing when lay was still promoting with them, but not to the extent where you would remember the lipsyincing, during the last three comebacks there isn't a part that is lysinced, even the tempo bridge is sung live and acappella with only the backing harmonies, now there's another group who usually dont lipsync which is blackpink,but these days the backing vocals are so lound that the live isn't enjoyable, another group uses this and i'm a big fan of this group and their vocals, which is dreamcatcher who are incredible performers, probably one of the best feale performers but during scream and boca era they have been using loud backing vocals and it really doesn't let the person enjoy the show since you always hear two voices at the same time.

I'm glad you talked about txt evolution in cysm, like they really were trying to sing live. I really hope you see their "performance" of blue hour in genie yt channel. It was only them singing without dancing and it sounded amazing. Like, the boys really can sing, but it's difficult with their hard coreographys. The same goes to ateez and itzy I guess

You really took your time on this. The only flaw I see is that you don't hear and see just how bad BP sings and performs. They are very sloppy and even the clips you showed are examples of how week and/or out of tune they usually are when they are live. If you truely have a love of music please really watch their inconsistency. They literally do not know how to stay consistent in a professional level of singing and performing as a group. Definately not a top ranking group like red Velvet who has performed amazingly acoustically and are almost always on point. Camapare just these two groups. You may finally see how weak BP is. Don't think I'm a BP hater. I don't care what group it is they are either bad or good and BP is one of the worst and inconsistent groups I have ever experienced.

They really don't. There is practically no group that sings live during the chorus. With Atz you can clearly see and hear Mingi (mostly, Yeo and mama are also on there but are sometimes less easy to notice) lip singing over the studio track. The difference between his live and studio voice is very very big.

If you listen to the words that she was saying you’ll be able to tell that she was saying that TXT use heavy back up vocals because they mostly focus on choreography. So what about other groups that don’t mostly focus on choreography? I personally don’t think that they should have as heavy background vocals. Seeing as the core of their performance doesn’t rely on the dances. I’m just gonna assume you’re a blink because of the simile you used about Jennie’s skin in the biasness. All I can say that if you do go back to when she was talking about Jennie you can obviously tell that she was saying it not in a hating way. Obviously because she was talking about how much she liked the rawness of Jennie’s voice when she performs live versus when the background vocals were over powering.

Tbh I’m totally okay with them using loud backtracks, lip syncing and using pre records during dance performance when they sing. So long as they can sing live in performance where they only sing. But it becomes ridiculous if they also lip sync in performance where they only sing. I’m also okay with backtrack in performance where they only sing, so long as the backtrack is really low(cause sometimes idols perform nonstop and they aren’t given breaks to catch their breath.

I actually think YG's way of doing live performances are pretty smart. Like, you let the idols sing most of the song, but then you put backtracks once in a while, just in case they need support. Stan YG artists.

BTS sing to pre-record pretty often and I get it. For example, their first Dynamiter performance for the USA was not live at all which is no wonder because that was a very important show and a full English song. And it's very clear that it's not live. What bothers me is their fans who will do everything to prove that they always sing live. No, they don't! They use pre-record! But not always. They are really great at singing live even while dancing and you can actually hear it because of breathing and imperfections. And I really appreciate those performances because they really do great. But they don't do it all the time so, Army, stop lying to yourselves ))) Or maybe they just use auto-tune as postproduction which is a common thing as well. That also doesn't really make performance "live" because we don't hear that live result.

It seems like you don't know pre recorded. For example, in blackpink's lovesick girls prom, if u listen to 1011 mr removed and 1018 mr removed, the voice is same. so the company must use the same pre recorded in the same show. and u can find other kpop groups have the same problem.

i'm sooooo glad you brought up LAR!! i see so many fans are fooled into thinking idols are singing live and dancing hard choreo at the same time, even though it is obvious that the vocals are pre-recorded (probs not recorded in a studio, but off-stage during rehearsals of the music show or something). i'm a BTS stan and BTS is sooo notoriously bad at lipsyncing, even in their own music videos lol, personally i think it's cute and it makes it so obvious when they are lipsyncing vs singing live, but still fans INSIST they are singing live just because they can hear their breath. there are manyyyy examples of them singing live, but like you said there are just some music shows and situations that call for LAR and lipsyncing and that is 100% ok

Seriously though, they're dancing and singing. I think that's enough for me to say that "wow, that's so hard, you're doing great already." They're human and even if they make mistakes, that doesn't instantly mean they don't qualify as an idol. People wants too much and then blame the idol when it's not fulfill. Again, human, not robot.

For me, there's a 3rd kind of performance which I personally call "dubbed videos", as in sometimes the performance posted online or reshown on TV later plays a different yet similar recording of the artist's song. I think it's because realistically if you play the actual concert audio, you would mostly be hearing thousands of fans screaming their ears out over the singer's actual voice. I can't say for everyone here but when I went to a concert once, I'm sure I heard the artists sing live (if I could hear over the audience screams XD). Yet when the concert was reshown on TV later, it seemed like not only their voices were different, but the crowd was weirdly quieter than I remember, like dead silent. So fancams for me seem like the best way to hear the singer's true vocals (again, if you can hear over the crowd's screams. XD)

For me personally I don't have a problem with backing track, I would rather the idols perform the choreography well and not necessarily sing with 0 back track but still hear them well, then sing 100% live but sound out of breath

to be honest, you cannot really compare 2ND GENERATION IDOLS to the current generations because 2nd Gen rely on LIVE VOCALS instead of the BACK UP Vocals. You'll hear them panting, losing breathe, catching up notes when they're dancing while singing live vocals. It's always about VOCALS back then compared to what it is today.. you can only mention few groups nowadays that certainly use live vocals in performances.

I understand why most kpop groups perform with heavy backup vocals... Their choreography/performance is insane. But when fans react to performances where a member sings/holds this one super high pitch note (that is OBVIOUSLY an *autotuned backup vocal*) and say that they're the best or other idols can't even... it freaking annoys me... it's just so delusional. Backup vocals is for who can't know do some notes and are lying about your vocal potential. I prefer the 1 generation of kpop, where the groups don't use lipsync, backup vocals and nothing, just sing naturally and dance.

Y'all who are saying that they are okay with lip syncing they should just be honest, then you know what why they pretend, because of us, because of fans, they might have a fear if they don't sing live, then we 'll bash them, just like we do!!! + yes, I prefer live singing over lip syncing because I connect with the performance more and also I'm not much dance oriented, I prefer vocals over dance. And even if they sing live and make some mistakes, it's perfectly fine. Because live singing shows how much they can do as an idol, yes nowadays many groups are just focusing on choregraphy, because that's the "trend" and that's what "sells". so yes, they can lip sync once in a while, but at least at some point they should sing live to show that they can sing also, they're not just dancers, because if I ALWAYS have to watch idols dancing and lip syncing then believe me they should not be called idols or singers, they are just very good dancers, dancing to the songs and not singing, which I can find many youtube videos of normal dancers doing it 😂. The main point is that they can lip sync whenever they feel uncomfortable, but not always, if they refer to them as idols and not dancers.

I feel that If Blackpink did sing the song "So Hot" live & made a mistake people would just attack them using "They ruined the song" or something as an excuse. But I definitely could tell that they didn't perform the studio version.
