BLACKPINK: LIGHT UP THE SKY | Official Trailer | Netflix iritem.info/cd/fy-lm-h-y/bc2pj9zJ3Km8qmQ.html
Hi, welcome! My name is Angelina, and today I wanted to give a synopsis of Blackpink’s documentary on Netflix called Light Up The Sky! Now, I actually spent a whopping 9.99$ just to watch this because free trial wasn’t available and I cancelled my netflix account like 2 weeks ago, because the 100 finale aired and I was like well what’s the point.
Blackpink’s “Light Up The Sky” is “a 2020 documentary film directed by Caroline Suh, that tells the story of South Korean girl group Blackpink as bandmates and as individuals, and details their rise to fame. The film was released just under two weeks after the release of Blackpink's first studio album The Album, and has been described as "an endearing documentary that emphasizes each member's individuality"
Proving that music knows no borders or language barriers, BLACKPINK: LIGHT UP THE SKY offers a personal look at the four members of BLACKPINK, from their years as trainees to their current global success as the most popular K-pop girl group of all time.
Watch BLACKPINK: LIGHT UP THE SKY globally on Netflix October 14: netflix.com/blackpinklightupth...

Baby girl. Imma say it. YGe's Teddy and Blackpink Members and Staff has the professionalism cut Different above the rest of the companies. While many fall into "scandals and controversies", you won't see that on YGe's artists unless those are calculated moves. Having said that. Those songs yoh speak of are not "hidden for fun". You see how these girls make their music. How dedicated they are for their art. Critic's has no idea what goes beyond their studio nor an imagination of what music they make. They release what they want to release for the fans and not for clout. These is why they only bring out quality content. Unlike the many idol groups that is trying. Main Reason why BLACKPINK IS THE REVOLUTION is that they are built Different. 4 Extremely Talented, Creative, Intellectual, Cultured, well-mannered Women of the 21st century.

Idk, I kinda felt like it was unnecessary. It was just blah to me. They haven't disbanded yet and were at their peak so there really wasn't anything to show. It timing is a little off. If they did the doc in the end of their career, it would make more sense

It is a very well-done documentary, in my opinion. Their struggles, their triumphs, their relationships-they let us into their world a bit deeper (they are not obliged to tell us everything). After all, it’s their documentary, not about YG or their other groups.

I've been following Blackpink very casually since their debut, never really stanning or anything, just always checking out their comebacks and thinking the girls seemed super sweet and genuine and wanting the best for them. Lately I've been listening to their music more in depth and really growing to love and appreciate them. This documentary may not have been ground breaking and I didn't expect it to be. But it did show the girls in a really genuine and authentic way that made me fall in absolute love with them, and for that I'm grateful.

I kinda understand people who think this documentry didn't live upto their expectations but we have to understand that this was their first time doing something like this and it can be really hard to open up about something knowing that you'll be judged by it. So what I think about this, Jennie- she indirectly roasted those who had a problem with her RBF face, I'm here for it. Rosè - How she talked about all her insecurities regarding writing etc., the scene in which I cried the most. Jisoo - Talked about her family and she wanted to improve on stage, the scene made me the most angry , who the F*ck called her monkey?? Calm down it was just a joke at least that's what i think. Lisa- I am a Lisa bias but being honest It seemed something was missing in her story, all members talk about their insecurities but I think Lisa was not comfortable with it but I loved when all members say that she is like a ball of sunshine because she indeed is. Overall I loved this because I'm a blink and I love seeing my girls develop into intelligent and powerful ladies. I AM LIKING MY OWN COMMENT BECAUSE I KNOW NOBODY IS GONNA READ THIS BIG COMMENT. LOL

re: rose and somi i didn't fully understand this before watching, but i understood when watching the scene. a lot of the time, producers will have beats and melodies saved in their files that they'll hold onto and offer to various groups - you can see this really clearly on hip hop shows like Show Me The Money and Good Girl, where the artists are reviewing a set of beats and they pick the one that works best with what they want to go with. Most likely, this is what was happening with Rose. She was working with Teddy by singing on top of some of his already created beats to see which sound worked for her best. At the time, they were playing around with the WYWF beat and it was probably a contender for a Rose solo. Some way down the line, they decided to nix it as her solo and move onto other beats, and then Somi heard the beat, loved it and could work with it, and it went on to become her song. so essentially, they both had the option to choose the beat/melody and Rose passed on it, Somi said yes to it. I do think Somi has a bit of Rose flair vocally in this song, so I wouldn't be surprised if she heard some of Rose's versions and liked the way her voice sounded on it and chose to channel some of that for her song.

I don't think it is weird 2Ne1 and Bigbang wasn't mentioned. They were shown in some clips and most ppl don't associate Bp with them. For you the 2nd generation's presence may be more vivid than Bp's, but this movie was made about Blackpink, not about their company's history. And Bp is more than enough to carry a documentary on her own right.

As for Jisoo - Korean family's older folks often call kids ugly for superstitious reasons - so that evil beings won't get jealous of the child and cause illness. Saying kids looking like animals is common. It doesn't meant they don't love the kid or they actually think she's ugly - she's telling this in a joking manner. But I can see how Western fans would be alarmed by this due to ignorance.

Teddy is Asian American, and he's suffered from the racism in the American music industry. That is why he went back to SK trying to make it as a YG rapper. Now he's a star producer who made hit song after another, and yet the US racist industry categorize his music as "KPOP", un-worthy of competing with pop music made by non-Asians. He's just expressing his frustration that he's just always excluded no matter how successful or talents he is. I don't think many non-Asian American fans can understand the pain of hearing his music is just "K-POP".

I didn't like the documentary. I thought it was VERY surface level. I felt like the girls wanted to say more but couldn't/wouldn't. And in a way it came across like Jennie and Rose didn't like the path they've taken and feel very restricted. Just my two cents.
gouri satyan
gouri satyan پیش 2 ماه
But I just have opposite thoughts. I think they want to keep their privacy and not share much. If we were in their place we would have not able to share much because it's something that goes in the public so we wouldn't want to share much. **Even if they were holding back something , I think they were just being thoughtful. We are in a time where simple topics can be twisted by people and media and which could have created only more problems , hence the more uncomfortable they become. In that perspective , you're maybe right.**

I feel like this was more of a: This is Black Pink doc, which is why they didn't get into the scandal stuff. Like this is something if I was in middle or school show my parents to show who Black Pink is and why I'm obsessed with them. If someone was like: Hey I wanna get into Black Pink more I would be like: Watch this doc. So I don't mind it was surface level. I have mixed feelings about what I'm gonna say. But I wish the candid scenes (Not the 1 on 1 interview) seemed more natural like you can tell the director was like your going sit here and talk about x,y, and z. And it was kind of hard for me to watch. Idk cause I don't know them and never will so for all I know that could be their real personality.

They dont have to mention BIGBANG, 2NE1, or even YG. It's a documentary about them not someone other than the pinks. Also they show what they want, not what you want. They showed us what they are comfortable with. They don't have to talk about YG scandals since they're not involved in that shit. Just to be clear Angelina. Its about Blackpink, not about your desires.

It's definitely a surface-level doc. Like, it's fun, but even setting aside the YG scandals, 2NE1, etc, there's just so much they don't show even when it's about BP. The creative process, for instance... they showed basically nothing but the girls showing up to the studio and singing a line. They keep telling us Rose loves songwriting, how it's a big part of her life, but they never show her actually doing it - I definitely believe she writes, and we know she plays guitar beautifully, but something about just showing her playing in a dark studio (playing a song that I don't think they give her writing credits for?) doesn't feel real to me. I would've loved to hear her just playing something of her own casually, even just a few seconds, and that storyline they were making for her would've been that much more real. There's just a lot of little moments or ideas like that the doc wants to tell us about, but reading between the lines it feels like there's something missing.

I agree that they didn't go too deep on the documentary. I felt that this is for new kpop fans or to people who's intrested to know more about KPOP in general. It's like BLACKPINK's introducing kpop to the world and how the training process works. tbh an hour documentary is not enough. Haha I want to see more of them. Hopefully we can get another docu maybe after a couple of yrs. As JENNIE says that this is only the beginning. 😄

@LOVESICK petals don't worry, I'm not upset. I'm not Jisoo, and I cannot claim to know what Jisoo's going through or how she's thinking right now... sorry if I came across as a bit intense. I understand where you're coming from, but I think there's a difference between having a private joke between close friends/siblings, and telling the whole world about your mistreatment by your own relatives in a documentary. If she was joking, she'll have a bit of explaining to do to her relatives because she's caused them to "lose face"

I was treated as an outcast growing up - when I started school, I didn't speak english, and was literally attacked by the otber kids. When I got home I was caned and beaten by my parents for spoiling my school uniform. That was my everyday reality, and not something I'd talk or joke about, even though nowadays a lot of people take me for being a joker. You cannot imagine how that's like as a young child, not having anyone to turn to. ...if you really think it's a joke - how do you think her relatives will feel that she told the whole world she was called ugly and mistreated by them? And have you seen Jisoo's post since the documentary?

*Were there any restrictions imposed upon you? Because obviously the whole K-pop scene is incredibly controlled.* Caroline Suh: "Yes. And that’s what I had heard before embarking on this. But surprisingly, once everyone agreed to make the film, YG really stepped away. And they really deferred to the girls in terms of what choices they want to make. And so we had a back and forth with the girls about what they wanted to film. They wanted things to be real. And so that was really between us and without the company controlling it at all. So that was a pleasant surprise."

The reason why they didn't expect them to blow up because of the fact that they know they didn't put any effort to promote them before debut. Also bear in mind that the documentary's main purpose was to basically introduce blackpink, basic information about them, how they debuted and what they've done so far. They weren't trying to make a very dark documentary and the girls are still a bit uneasy about sharing a more deeper details about themselves. Even Jisoo herself posted on ch+ after the docu was releases that she wasn't able to open up more on the docu because she was "defensive" and still not comfortable with being vulnerable. I honestly think Light Up The Sky is more of an ultimate guide to Blackpink rather than it being a gritty look of what goes on behind the fame.

I honestly don't buy what Teddy was saying about not releasing more music. Obviously people will agree with quality over quantity but that statement was like a suggestion that other groups are simply releasing every song they make and not caring whether it is good or fits with the group's style. EVERY single kpop group has unreleased songs. Every single musician has unreleased songs! What Teddy didn't say was that it all is a business strategy. With fewer releases, the hype for each song and comeback is greater and causes more views on mvs, more streams for each individual song. It is a choice they made not out of artistic selectivity but to make MORE MONEY. Other groups who debuted around the same time as blackpink have released A LOT more music. For Teddy to say what he said suggests that those other groups only have more songs because they have a lower bar for how good their music is. Those groups have more songs because they want to share as much good content as possible with their fans instead of starving them so that they are constantly hungry for more. TLDR: Teddy said quality over quantity and that's all great but other groups are giving quality AND quantity. Just release those other songs YG and stop being money hungry. To anyone that reads this and thinks I am not a blink, please understand that I am frustrated BECAUSE I am a blink. I feel like these girls are talented and deserve to show the full range of their talents on a wide array of tracks. I feel starved for music and I resent YG for this.

I'd say Jisoo was being entirely honest about her treatment from her family. Korean culture is very critical of people's appearance and I've heard lots of Korean people express that their family judged their appearance heavily, even pushing them to get plastic surgery very young (Eugene from the Try Guys has talked about this a few times, for example). So I don't doubt that her family were harsh on her and I'm sure it's strange for her to be the visual of a group as an adult after all that

And they include other groups in the video when mentioning Kpop is just how respectful and acknowledging they are about other artist. Maybe the reason why they included Lollipop mv in it bcs its first bigbang and 2ne1 collaboration and it was iconic PERIYOOODTT. with as little that we get to see from BP, it was good. but there were so many areas they could have explored more of, that i'm used to from other documentaries. the documentary was very confusing and seemed so toned down from what i usually see in one. i know they cant show everything, but everything seemed filmed for a documentary and not just natural footage. like, Rose with the guitar in the room. without lights. except for that one spot light. like they were putting on a show and not actually showing anything. not many emotions were shown. very surface level like you said. the conversations seemed too planned, like even if we were supposed to see more of the girls, every conversation almost seemed too perfect. they seemed more real in the confessionals, but even then, it seemed like they kept looking off screen to read a script/make sure they didn't say too much with their managers watching. (i might rewatch, i could be wrong) and it just served to show how much privilege they had it from the very beginning (personally and mostly professionally). but also how that privilege was a double edged sword. how they had all that media attention in the beginning, but mostly due to being the 1st gg in 7 years and because it was recently around the time of 2NE1/Bom scandal if i remember 2016 correctly. so YG was probably using them to divert attention also. and that whole, we are picky about what we put out, like many of the songs follow the same format. around the same time, this member comes in, there's the same beat drop at around the same time, the melody changes around the same time, etc. just say yall just want to use them for endorsements and brand deals and models more than letting them be musicians like the girls want and signed up for. let them write and produce! i wish they were able to talk more and actually address issues. like when Jennie mentioned her injuries, that would have been a good time for YG to address the "scandal" and how they felt.

Critics says they were expecting to see what’s really going on behind the KPOP scene, or YG scandals etc. but they forget, this isnt a story about them but of BLACKPINK. I think people would love to hear that sure and explore the ins and out of it. And I agree, but as I said this isn’t an “expose KPOP/YG” documentary.

Finished watching it and I think overall even though it wasn’t in depth I think it really humanized the girls. They got to take off the mask a bit more because out of all the YG groups they have the biggest wall up or idol image that is maintained but my take on each member Jennie- surprisingly the most relatable. She seems like an everyday person just doing a job. Even tho she loves singing and dancing I think she’s in the wrong industry. The idol life and system just seems like a lot for her. I think she’s an example of if any regular person entered the system and was overwhelmed by the expectations Rosé- came off as really passionate. I almost felt bad for her too because she seemed to have a big respect with music but is stuck in a very manufactured system of Kpop. I hope she gains confidence and branches out as a great solo artist Jisoo- Seems very hard working. I didn’t get as much passion about music or performing from her but I admired how she had a good work ethic and dedicates herself to what she wants to do like acting or idol life Lisa- I feel like we didn’t get to know anything new but it just affirmed what I thought about her. She’s just a natural performer. What I noticed is that she was more built and used to the life than the others. Like the fact that she remains upbeat and grateful for all aspects of the experience. She’s like those type of ppl that are born to be famous and handle the life. We don’t know everything but I think she’s the most ideal and “idol”-like

Interesting how the excuse is that they’re super picky about the songs they release and yet so many are incredibly similar and of dubious quality (looking at you, Ice Cream). I don’t believe for a second that they’re *THAT* picky to only have had a fistful of songs for the past 4 years and now finally have a “full length” album with only 8 songs. Just say Blackpink had other things to prioritize, like financially saving the company from ruin after all those damn YG scandals, and lie to somebody else 😒

I have to disagree with you, angelina. This was a documentary about Blackpink, not about Big Bang, 2NE1, or YG in general. None of that belongs in the documentary unless it directly affected BP. And even then only if the members were comfortable talking about such things and YG had given them clearance to talk about it. Yes, it sucks that they would need permission to talk about things that involved them, but they are YG employees and thus need to conform to their rules of publicity. That's just the way it is.

The director, Caroline Su actually said that YG was hands off with the documentary. She approached YG with questions about the documentary and YG told her not to ask them but go talk to BLACKPINK instead. YG said it's BLACKPINK's documentary and they girls are the ones who need to be happy with it. Caroline said YG literally had no say in the documentary. They just watched the final product when it was all done and said. Ok.

This is the problem with people not watching and did not get the full context, its obvious Jisoo was joking. She is the baby of the family and obviously pampered by them. And what relatives didn’t call you ugly or names, they are obviously teasing her and its the privileged of being in a family. Other people deserved a smackdown if they calls her that. People who are indignant are just being pompously self righteous and blind. Your actions are not getting any points from her anyway.

Excellent review. I saw an interview with Caroline Suh, the director, that YGE was hands-off. They were directed to the girls to decide how and what to reveal. Most people seem to forget that this is not a BLACKPINK Documentary (I.E., Autobiography) but a Netflix documentary about BLACKPINK. So the girl's openness and candor about their experiences even surprised the director.
if you stan got7 i love you
honestly, i was indeed expecting a more "in-depth" documentary where they talk more about their process of becoming BLACKPINK and the time where PINKPUNK was created and their own personal feelings and perspectives on the kpop industry as a kpop idol and how they deal with the hatred and malicious comments and how it affects them but again, they probably don't feel comfortable talking about that stuff or they aren't allowed to speak up about certain topics so i 100% respect and understand that. i feel like the documentary is a good way to show and introduce BLACKPINK to new blinks / non kpop fans where they don't particularly understand or know the training process of being a kpop trainee, BLACKPINK's raise to fame and the member's backgrounds and why they chose to pick the "idol-life". i hope there is a sequel / another part to this documentary where they talk about things more on detail and possibly more pre-debut footage but again, they probably aren't comfortable / allowed to show it through the documentary. the documentary had me hanging and i personally find that 1 hour isn't long enough, however, i did enjoy watching it and it gave me a reminder that each member of BLACKPINK has a different story to share and different thoughts. the girls did great and i hope they become even more confident with showing their passion for music, song-writing and producing because i know all of the girls are capable of doing so.

it is possible that the "what u waiting for" beat was just there to cover the actual song they don't want you to hear.

Jennie seemed so sad to me. She is a very laid back person probably anemic but when i see her i get the sense of some one who just has a profound sadness inside. I think she probably never felt loved by her mother. What kind of parent leaves her child in another country alone then is ready to ship her off some where else afterward. In contrast Rose's parent are begging her to come back home. When she said she wanted to be a singer i think it was an excuse to come home, probably never expected to actually become one .

It's about Blackpink so there's no need for YG to include the scandals which BP was never part of. Sure kpop fans already know about the issues, but the target audience was meant to appreciate the Pinks and see them as artist.

Whistle was the first MV that they showed on the Debut Showcase & is the 1st listed song on Square One. I think people see that BBY is 1st listed on their YT channel makes them think it was the title track.

I think is good they didn't show too much abour their life and feelings, bcs then the fans thin they can openly talk about it and make stories in their heads about their private life. I think is a way to protect the girls and i prefer this way, people have to learn to not judge and keep their opinions about other people lifes.

The director stated multiple times that YG had no oversight on how this documentary was made & left it all up to the Netflix team on what they show.

The not debuting after years of training is so interesting and upsetting. There was suppose to be 9 girls and blackpink(pinkpunk) and I think 2 are in in active girl groups Gidle and Secret Number

No. It was the same beat but the lyrics and melody were totally different.
Blackpink is k-pop stans punching bag
A lot of people/Antis are really quick to judge Blackpink, without Knowing the truth they think that Blackpink had it easy since they are from the big 3, you can't just discredit the girls and call them 'Pretty dolls', 'overrated' and 'Undeserving' all you like. The fact that these girls had to leave their families at a young age and beat thousands of people in audition just to pursue their dreams, shows how hard they worked. Some people also love pulling the 'Privilege card' and act like they were given stuff easily, but in reality, they would sleep on Bunk beds with cockroaches every night and then only go grocery shopping once a month, survived by eating scrambled eggs and strawberries, and also had hard training during there trainee days . Like Jennie said 'its easier to judge then to believe' ,don't act like you know everything about Blackpink unless you walked in their shows!!!
