Hi, welcome! My name is Angelina and this is an episode of Kpop investigations where I basically take a specific subject and do a bit of a deep dive into it. And today, I thought we could discuss english songs in Kpop and if we could still consider certain groups as part of Kpop despite fans themselves othering said groups.
Is BTS still Kpop or are they part of their own category? With releases like Ice Cream and Dynamite, are we seeing a shift in Kpop that could make it lose its appeal? I’ve seen a lot of this type of dialogue recently and I thought we could discuss it.
By taking a look at Kpop's history with English songs and fan's questions surrounding it, I thought it could be an interesting topic to discuss.
Also, please know that I am in no way claiming that international fans can gatekeep Kpop and exclude whoever they desire based on globalization, nor am I claiming that western validation is required or needed to be successful in Kpop.

why is that when kpop groups come out with japanese releases no one has a problem but english becomes a big no no? like? what's the problem? if a group has a bigger international fanbase then isnt smarter to incorporate them for more success?

BTS don't need Western validation. Remember, an artist makes music for himself and to his fans. It just so happens that BTS has more international fans because korean community have been invalidating them since they debuted. BTS and BLACKPINK is still KPOP. Periodt. And also, beware of those BTS antis disguise as an ARMY to ruin BTS's and ARMY's reputation. Also, some antis been telling ARMYs that they're not KPOP stans because they only know BTS. And maybe that's what brought you to make this long, incomprehensible video. It is always going to be okay to only stan BTS and not the other group. That's their preference. P.S. I'm a KPOP stan.

But, I think that when they change their most of their song to English just to become famous in the United States, so I think they are not k-pop. In my opinion they do this just to become famous, and they forget what is k-pop, if you change k-pop just to become famous.....i don't think they deserve to be call as k-pop Idol

It's kind of funny now both groups are known globally, and now non Korean people starts to hate the label "K" saying its not kpop anymore. So ignorant.

As a Korean perspective, International fans should stop gatekeeping kpop of what's not kpop or not its for us to Koreans to decide, just listen to the music and like it.
For BTS I feel like they wanna make their worldwide fans happy so they did an English song and for Blackpink they’re trying to get into the western market more.

We all have different opinions, so don't come to me saying "Kpop is just an industry, not a genre". I don't BTS and Blackpink are Kpop anymore either, and I'm not saying that after they released dynamite. And I don't feel this way with only BTS and Blackpink, I feel it with other soloist and groups as well. Like BTS and Blackpink doesn't give me that Kpop vibe, gives me lots of American basic vibes. But Blackpink's How You Like That is different, that song is a bop, but they released Ice Cream and Lovesick Girls, it was so westernized. I love those songs, but it was too "American" to be Kpop. Same for Sour Candy and Kiss and Make Up. When Blackpink debuted, I had that Kpop vibe, until Kill This Love came out. Again, we all have different opinions, so don't come to me with your "Kpop is an industry" stuff.

Idk about blackpink but I still like their songs.....but talking about bts it is their first English song and that too because the song was not that charming when sung in korean said by bts and they made this song in its original language only for the sake of song and the kind of situation the world is going through these days! And blackpink often changes their language when collaborating with western artist but bts don't!🙏🏻💜🖤💗

i feel like people who say they aren't kpop are just trying to ostracize them bc they either feel they're too good and deserve to be placed above the rest of the industry or they don't like them and want them separated from other groups. like they're kpop groups. just because they branch out into other genres or try to cater to their largely western fanbases doesn't mean they're suddenly not kpop artists

It's kinda stupid, that they are questioning if it's still k-pop. It's still kpop coz a korean group's song. Just like here in The Philippines, we do have groups and artists that have all english songs but it still PPop coz the singers are Filipinos.. you know what i mean..

They are K-pop but honestly BTS is starting to go with pop. Dynamite and Ice Cream are more pop songs for the type of style they have. Blackpink is keeping her K-pop style because of The Album. Despite BTS is going more with pop with that style. I hope BTS next comeback be again K-pop. For the people who say K-pop is not a genre and it's only an industry. That is false because vocal coacchs and proffesionals in music they know the difference between K-pop, J-pop and Pop. It's easy to recognize K-pop and pop because of different styles and type of vocals

ever since the beginning, kpop had been trying to be more worldwide, even though their songs are mostly Korean. to solve the problem, they started translating their songs into different languages to attract more fans outside of Korea. besides that, they also went to promote outside of Korea as well. this includes concerts and world tours. if they are not trying to be worldwide, they wouldn’t be doing world tours around the world, right? so this doesn’t apply to just BTS and Blackpink, but most kpop groups as well. but what BTS and Blackpink did was...they were offered things that other groups didn’t. and this is not only because of awards and shows but also about the idols’ personalities, how each company promotes them, etc. in order for ppl outside of Korea to recognize them and like them. so Dynamite and Ice Cream, yes they are English songs (not translated), but they were made to show love to their large foreign fan base and attract more ppl. I say foreign cuz im including other countries as well. and let’s be real, once we got into kpop, we start acknowledging other groups under the genre. so they are gonna be more introduced to kpop, making kpop worldwide. so yea...that’s my thoughts on it, hehe.

Why kpop is kpop, it's because of the years they spent training, English is just a language just like Japanese, So kpop is not because of the Korean language.

I think BTS is kpop. They have the dancing, the styling, the Korean promotions, they went through the idol training system, etc. But I don't think being an Army makes you a kpop stan, the same way that being a Blink, a Once, etc doesn't make you a kpop stan. To me being a kpop stan is actually liking kpop not only one group. There are many Armys who only like BTS, so to me that clarifies being just a BTS stan vs. a kpop stan.

i don't agree with btspop or bppop i think kpop is just maturing like groups who were famous for being cute(twice with upbeat songs) suddenly starts doing english mature slow songs i think kpop is just widening its range and becoming more mature songs like physco, feel good and wanna be myself don't sound like kpop but still are kpop and i think its weird putting bp and bts a whole genre is exaggerating its just that they have a special sound and westernize their songs for their western audience :)
persona پیش 3 ماه
Bp are obviously making songs in English to make it into the western industry their album has 2-3 english songs?? most of their collabs are in english or with very limited korean. Bts made one official english song and they've already explained why they made it in English (because they wanted the whole world to cheer up during this hard time and korean didn't fit the vibe of the song as much and it wasn't even planned to be released let alone chart high with it, they didn't have any expectations) bts are already very big in the west without English songs (based on achievements). There are several reasons which doesn't make bts kpop and none of those reasons are the language (bts outsold outcharted and outstreamed the entirety of kpop) bp are very far off to be not considered kpop. Bp are promoted as the biggest gg but they still can't even sell out an ARENA world tour not a stadium one. Funny how kpop stans called bts westernized when they broke into America with a Korean song and now kpop groups are releasing full English albums just to make it into the US.

multistans in this comment section saying there is no such thing as btspop, that isoffensive to other groups and all...Btspop started because antis were saying things like bts should be kicked out of kpop, bts are too westernised ect ect that is why bts stans were like ok so if we aint kpop, we'll be btspop, nothing more nothing less. The term BTSPOP does NOT mean bts is better or 'transcending' in comparisons to other kpop groups. Its literally just something like a defense mechanism. Don't worry no one is meaning to offend the amazing idol groups you stan. I'm a multistan too, just wanted to get the point across... and there is also a meme going around about music shops having separate sections for kpop and bts lmao dw yall there isn't much to this term...

things KPOP stans don't understand 1. KPOP isn't a genre its an industry 2. you cant say KPOP is westernized when it was inspired by American pop music in the first place. 3. Releasing songs in english is simply a way to earn the top spot and more cash because these companies know fans will eat that shit up. Or if you want me to sugar coat it, they want to get more attention from different audiences.

catergorizing 'pop' genre by its nationality? actually it is WRONG! there's no nation boundary in music. We can tell difference of common features between pop music of different countries like Japanese pop or Korean pop but defining its genre by nationality is not desirable.. pop music is just pop music.

I think the definition of "K-Pop" could be interpreted as groups/idols/music that are products of the Korean music industry specifically. As you know, idols that aren't Korean and songs that aren't Korean but were still made by "K-pop" companies are still considered K-pop. If a group of Koreans that lived in, I don't know, Germany for example, were to form a group and release music, it probably wouldn't be considered K-pop despite being in Korean and having Korean members, it just wouldn't be the same thing. This is just how I see it making the most sense to me personally.

In my opinion, I feel like BTS is Kpop. Yes, dynamite is in English, but they never called it Kpop. They even said it was a English song when releasing it. But other songs, BTS does a good job keeping Korean in it and keeping that Kpop swag. With Blackpink, I think at the start they were Kpop and more going back to the 2014 Kpop genre. But, Blackpink keeps with their English choruses, and like ice cream was literally almost all English. And they never said it would be an English track. On their new album, they have songs in full English as well. So to me blackpink is not Kpop, like they used to be. YG has just too westernized them to make money off of them. And I've been a fan since 2012, so I have experience with Kpop.

I really feel like the companies make Japanese or Chinese or English Songs or versions of those songs to compensate for either of the members were the fan base because if you think about it members like Mark and Johnny from NCT there from Canada and America so the best or one of the best ways to include American and Canadian Fence is to make English versions of songs or have English lyrics or just make English songs altogether I feel like they are just trying to reach out to Fans and make them feel a little bit more connected with the group Away and if you think about it members like Yuta He’s Japanese so in order to connect Japan to the group they make Japanese songs and have a connection through Yuta Also wavy they had so many Chinese members that it only made sense to give them their own unit it only made sense to make Japanese songs to branch out into that market anyway since they already have so many Japanese members anyway. So what I’m trying to say is that yes everything is still K-pop it’s just trying to branch out and connect with fans in different markets different languages and different places.

They are both kpop groups as they came from kpop. However, when talking about songs, I do think its different. When I think of kpop, its the more the production than language. Sure, they may be english versions, but for me, who is it by? For BP's album, I noticed half of the songs were in english, but the only songs I would consider non kpop songs-ish are "Ice cream" and "bet you wanna" not cause its in english, but the production. Those songs were written and produced by more western artists than kpop producers, so I feel like those are somewhat pop songs. I don't think language is a big part , cause even tho "crazy over you" is full english, I consider it a kpop song cause the production is mostly from kpop producers. Idk about love to hate me tho, I consider it a mix of kpop and pop ish idk about that. Imo, if a kpop artist creates a english version of a song or a english song in general, it isn't really gonna attract new fans. It might, but I feel like english songs and versions are for their own International fanbase to enjoy, so I don't think english songs won't do much to the fandom. With Dynamite, It was sung by korean artists, but was produced by mainly western producers, so it could be considered pop when just talking about the song and not the artists who are singing it. I do consider "the album" as a kpop album, but when going through the songs, I would say some songs are more western songs than kpop because of the production. I hope I make sense :)

i dont get this discussion, any korean group can sing in English, German, Swahili, whatever the f they want to do, its their creative right, why r we putting them in cages and dictating if they should identify as k-pop or not. weird stuff also, yeah, we know u think whoever collaborated with lame florida or some other stuff nobody remembers, u think they paved the way, we know ur stance on that. the thing is having a paid collaboration means jack shit if nothing comes out of it, and that's what happened in all examples u have made in previous videos, those collaborations had not just zero but -10 impact on other korean groups. so that doesn't count for anything. paving the way means opening the doors for others and none of wonder girls songs or other collaborations did that, it all died as a sick sad cat upon arrival. so pls, just don't. blackpink and bts opened the doors for other k-pop groups to be signed to western labels and THAT'S IT. no groups before did that, so can we just acknowledge the obvious and move on. it does not diminish other groups at all, it's just the reality.
Lena پیش 3 ماه
Usually old K-pop songs were released in Korean versions before or after the English ver release so I don't count it as an English song because it was released in Korean anyway so what's the problem?

Bts and BlackPink are and will forever be Kpop, but at the very moment they are more GLOBAL pop, because of their popularity internationally. But the main reason i think fans question Kpop in this way is because the new generation don’t know about the entire history of Kpop and that it’s been selling itself to the west since the beginning of time. They expect to hear something new when entering the whole world of Kpop, so when an english generic pop song suddenly appears, it becomes stigmatising. It’s especially difficult for fans to accept western collaborations for the same reasons.

there’s nothing wrong actually if they produced songs in every language, to convey the message of their songs. kpop’s a hint of westernized-korean bop. just don’t take it too far. eg, being fully westernized and the songs are all english and etc. kpop are way creative in their behind-mvs, the story behind the songs they have. generally, they are a fun experience to those who wanted diversity and different concepts.

Ahhhh I'm not even a Blink and I'm annoyed with the way Blackpink gets degraded. People still ragging on the girls because for their first 3 years they only had 13 songs to show for it, and when they finally got 8 new songs this year even their efforts this past year aren't good enough because half of them are in English. I saw a comment here saying the girls said that the songs sounded better in English than in Korean, and you can think that's odd but the truth is that phrases that make sense in the context of one language don't always translate that well. Obligatory lyrics are the worst kind of lyrics methinks. And I remember seeing something about Jennie saying she wished she had more songs to sing at one of their concerts, so it's not like it's fun for them to get criticized for their lack of musical content. Blackpink and Blinks have to deal with misogyny all day every day, their hard work getting discredited because of how they've been managed by their company and the number of songs to their name. And even IF their overarching theme for title tracks has been girl crush, going "girl crush ewwww" like they aren't ONE of the best to do it is embarrassing because there is nothing wrong with strong women. And them releasing songs in full English shouldn't be a problem considering their international fanbase being as large as it is, sooo... They're both kpop. Armys carry a chip on their shoulder and don't let anyone forget how BTS was treated way back when, even though they obviously aren't even dealing with those exact people anymore. ATEEZ in school uniforms got them riled up ffs but like the concept was so effing different yet it didn't matter because scHooL unIfoRmS. I truly have no ill will towards the boys themselves or armys but people do need to chill and let go of shit because it's just not fair that everything other groups do gets slammed with accusations of copying BTS. Performing a cover of a sunbae's song, especially an extremely popular one, is so natural of a thing to do like??? If the group performing the song does it justice and puts their own twist on it to make it uniquely theirs, they're showing their artistry and ofc you can prefer the original over the cover but you DON'T have to hate on the covering group, which is something I don't get about kpop stans bc they deadass act like their unconstructive and hurtful comments are due to a group's objective lack of talent and not just totally subjective and biased against that/any other group (even though they are). Calling BTS's music BTSpop is making a statement that kpop can't be introspective and wasn't ever prior to the group's releases, reducing the genre/industry to just fun and meaningless music, though feel-good music is nothing to stick your nose up in the air at. And I read the history of BTSpop in one of the comments here, but I still said what I said. BTS are artists, yes, I will acknowledge that. I will acknowledge that their rappers write their own raps and other members may more rarely contribute as well. But treating them like they're above kpop is... forgetting their roots, not to mention confusing when y'all vote hard for them on KOREAN music shows. And... aren't they humble about their success? Lastly, I think the music shows allowing any songs that have full English lyrics to compete for the award is at least INFLUENCED by the pull that both Blackpink and BTS have in kpop and for that reason these shows don't want to get on the bad side of Bighit or YG because they want the most views they can get. The same cannot be said for the nugu groups Z-Boys and Z-Girls who debuted and also came back with full-English songs. It's not something that they'll get away with, maybe especially because they even call themselves z-pop.

*Are BTS and Blackpink still kpop?* Yes, but the difference is that, they are global artists. Worldwide famous and successful. They have a huge fan base in the west so to make those fans relate more to them is what makes them make English songs. Kpop was never a language wise genre. It's a music industry. It has always been looking up to the pop cultures. Idols literally debut Japanese combacks but then no one desires to talk about how it's all in a different language.Nobody gave the right to you to chose which languages your idols are gonna sing. Who paved the way in k-pop? You, ms angelina. Your video "Jennie the villain of k-pop" made me curious about her, which led me to get to know them. And now i am a blink at heart.

when will y’all understand? it’s not because of too much english on it, but musically-wise it SOUNDS western-ish. kpop and pop are way too different genres. ice cream and dynamite literally sound absolutely nothing like kpop- and they weren’t meant to.

you can never please the "kpop fans". we never question idols singing in Japanese but judge them for singing in english. well, ofcourse groups want their non-Korean fans singing to them. just educate yourselves first instead of shitting on groups.

I don't like this idea that BTS or Blackpink is superior to all of Kpop and that they are a whole other genre. This makes it seem that Kpop in general is inferior not only to Bts and Blackpink but also all of pop music (mostly american pop music since it's usually what they refer to when they say pop), this discredits all the work that every Kpop group has made aside from saying that western music is superior to eastern music (I am not saying any one is superior, it depends on your taste), also it implies because Bts and Blackpink have more songs in English they are western artists which is wrong since their companies are korean and they went though the kpop system. Also it implies that groups with more international or western fans are superior than groups with more korean or eastern fans.

In my opinion, just because of the fact that kpop groups decide to make an English song or a lot of English in songs doesn’t mean it’s not kpop. Yes, bts is drifting away from kpop and it feels like they aren’t really a kpop group, but they are. Same with blackpink. They decide to make English music not because they want to get out of kpop, but because they want to be creative and international. In my opinion, you can say kpop is losing its charm, but I feel that way about all music this year. This year isn’t the year for much things, making me personally feel like all music isn’t feeling the same before 2020. Tbh, if they are Asian, (Korean, Japanese, Thai, Chinese, etc.) and they are under a kpop entertainment, they are kpop. Stop thinking kpop isn’t kpop anymore, kpop is growing to be much more successful. Kpop will always have English, you can’t prevent it. If you don’t like it, all I can say is to grow up because kpop will be like this for a long time, and us true kpop fans appreciate it.

As far as I can remember, YG (back then known as member of idol group "Seo-taji and boys") is the first one to invite international musician to feature in his solo's. It was shocking and revolutionary, but YG made it a trendy in his hip-hop style songs. And because of his style of music, which was majorly influential from American music, YG was open to including English lyrics, and not relying on conservative "Korean" style.

I think it comes down to the sound of the song and not what language it is in. SuperM has an English song called Infinity, but the sound IS Kpop.

Bigbang, 2ne1, Wonder girls.etc made full English songs way before. It doesn't make sense to call them not kpop when other groups also did it before. It's K-pop with more English :)

If the group has more english songs then they better not call themselves kpop.

Korea is the place where the latest trends and technologies in the world are introduced quickly. People have a preconceived notion that America is the most advanced and cutting edge, but when you come to Korea, you will change your mind. Korea is already considered a top-notch player in cosmetics, fashion, dance, stage equipment and editing. Idols can perform much more sophisticated activities than countries such as the United States, China, and Japan. You've already experienced the poor quality of the Chinese KPOP stars who moved to China. I'm sure that even if BTS moves to an American agency, the quality of the stage will be lower. You've all seen Jimmy Phelon's BTS week performances, right? It was filmed by Korean staff in Korea.
